Smart Balance Boards: The Way of the Future

A smart balance board is a form of a flat lever used in balance training, recreation, brain development, therapy, musical training, athletic training and other forms of physical exercises. A traditional balance board resembles a see-saw and the user normally stands on it with the right and left foot at its opposite edges. The user’s body should be balanced enough to maintain the board’s edges from touching the floor to avoid falling off. Smart balance boards that are prevalent nowadays have wheels or rollers on the edges. The wheels of some smart boards are also electric.
How to Use Balance Boards
A person stands on top of the board that is placed on top of an unstable fulcrum. The unstable fulcrum is normally placed at the center of the board or both edges. The standard height of most traditional fulcrums ranges from 3 to 6 inches. Due to the instability of the fulcrum, people normally apply all their balancing skills to prevent a board edge from touching the floor. The rider exercises stimulate and teach the various parts of the body how to balance. The various body parts involved in this exercise are toes, soles, neck, ankles, hips, shoulders, knees, arms and the brain. The brain provokes the balancing sense consequently bringing about balance. Other organs involved in the balancing act are inner ears, proprioceptors, cerebellum, and eyes.
The forms of movement which the smart balance board can in include sliding, rotating, tilting, pivoting, rolling or a combination of several of them. The speed of a balance board differ with models, shape and fulcrum size. The speed is also determined by the fulcrum attachment. There are various types of fulcrum attachments that include temporary and permanent. The positioning of the fulcrum is also another factor determining speed. It can be positioned at the center and on the edges.
When using the balancing boards, different positions other than standing can as well be used for one to work on particular body muscles and diverse skills are applied. For example, better foot grip, the stood-on ground of most board models are made of rubber or other forms of rough textures. There are many forms of balancing boards nowadays. The most common are; plastic models and wooden models all which have tape or rubber on the edges to maximize the users’ grip to the board. A smooth surface texture under the shoes or feet can make a user to slip off the board and fall on the ground and get severe injuries.
Wobble balance boards are the type of boards that is largely made of plastic. Since they are shorter than their width, the wobble boards do not need to be strong or warp-resistant like other balance boards.
